Acting and Film School

If you asked youngsters back in the sixties and seventies what they wanted to be when they grew up, you could expect answers such as train driver, adventurer, doctor, lawyer, and teacher. However, if you ask the kids of today what they want to be when they grow up, you’ll often receive responses such as wrestler, pop-star, and a particular favourite, an actor. The movies of today have inspired many youngsters – and even a fair few adults – to look into a career in the film industry, both in front of and behind the camera. However, although the Hollywood stars and big time directors of today seem to have had everything handed to them on a plate, the truth is that the majority if them worked and studied darn hard to get where they are today.

Film work on either side of the camera requires a number of very important qualities. Without these qualities you will fail. You need determination, commitment, willpower, thick skin, the ability to take criticism, the ability to handle rejection, and the ability to remember your lines in the case of acting! Most people say that the world of movies is a very fickle one, and they are probably quite right. Getting into acting and film-making can be incredibly difficult, with many closed doors for novices to have to break down. On the other hand, if you have the commitment and determination, you can enjoy a very rewarding career at the end of it.

Whether you see yourself as the next Lawrence Olivier or Vivienne Leigh, or whether you fancy yourself as a Spielberg or Cronenberg, the first thing you need is training. You may think that you know everything you need to now about making films or acting, and that you are ready, willing, and able to walk into a job without any problems. However good you think you are, you have to be better. This is a hugely competitive industry these days, and to truly succeed you have to show that you have something extra – and his requires the fine honing of your acting, producing, directing, or camera skills.

You will find a wide range of acting and film schools throughout America, and the number of schools in operation has grown over the years in line with demand for this type of tuition. From the days of the silent movies, this is an industry that has been seen as glamorous, filled with super-sexy, super-rich, and super-famous people. It’s therefore no surprise that, with the new breed of Hollywood sex symbols and legends, a fresh wave of interest in the industry has erupted.

Attending an acting or film school is a valuable way of really honing your existing skills, or of learning new skills for the complete novice. You may attend these school and discover that you actually hate the thought of acting or directing – many a budding actor has found themselves at acting school only to discover that they are camera-shy – even some of the ones that ended up making it big in the golden years of Hollywood. You will learn some valuable skills and lessons at these schools, and hopefully the lucky ones will get a break into an industry that is often near impossible to break into.

Of course, attending acting and film school is no guarantee that you will get a break, or that you will ever get a job in the movie industry. That part is down to you – it depends on how well you learn, what your skills are like, how determined and dedicated you are, and whether you are able to handle rejection. When looking for an acting or film school, it is well worth checking out the previous students – with many schools you will come across at least a handful of famous names, and this will give you an idea of the success of the school as well as its reputation in the film industry. However, don’t assume that just because you are attending the same school as Clooney, Paltrow or Jolie, that you are going to be a hit for sure. However successful the acting or film school appears to be, your own success will be based on you.
